The daughter of Bugle Ann MacKinlay Kantor 9781171733478 Books

The story was wonderful, but the typeset was terrible. The type was so large that the person I gifted with the book said she would put it on the opposite side of the room to read it comfortably. The second book I ordered to replace the first was printed in 1980 and the pages were dark and weathered. I have ordered Mackinley Cantor out-of-print books from Amazon before and have been satisfied as they were current printings. What happened to those publishers? Why has Amazon not continued to distribute their work? I speak specifically of the University of Michigans's printing of "Daughter of Bugle Ann".
A Disappointed Customer.

The daughter of Bugle Ann MacKinlay Kantor 9781171733478 Books Reviews

One of the most baffling American success stories was the book MacKinlay Kantor called THE VOICE OF BUGLE ANN. Who would have guessed that Bugle Ann was a dog?

A fox terrier in fact. I didn't realize till after I got home that this book was part of the Derrydale Press Foxhunters Library. If you have delicate stomachs or believe in animal rights and you don't like fox hunting, you're not going to enjoy this book, so buyer beware. Kantor, who wrote this sequel in 1953, might not have been aware of the nascent animal rights movement. If so, he probably would have stuck to his guns so to speak, but otherwise it would be so easy to pretend that Bugle Ann, and her daughter, the adorable "Little Lady," were not fox terriers; they could just be collies or even poodles, it doesn't really matter to the storyline. In fact you could pretend they were kittens! The important thing i both volumes is that some people are just mean, and the way you know this is by how they treat animals.

In VOICE, the meanest man in town gets sent to prison for murder because people thought that he killed Bugle Ann. But luckily for the dog, lovely Camden Terry smuggled the injured hound far away where she could recover from her wounds. She allowed mean old man Jacob Terry to go to jail, but finally she relented and got the governor to pardon him. Good thing, too, as Camden was passionately in love with his son, Benji. This was the book that gave rise to naming your dog, "Benji," even a mutt. Benjy has "Indian eyes as well as Indian mannerisms (we always suspected that there was a swipe of the red-brush, somewhere in the family ancestry)" so he's extremely good looking and can hunt like a dog. Camden has eyes the color of violets and she's fragile, like a handkerchief. And yet she and Benjy love going to this one Ozark restaurant called, The Chili Chariot.

In the movie Maureen O'Sullivan played the part of Camden, "and in the sequel, set immediately after the events in Book One, the character of Camden Terry is very much like a Mia Farrow waif type, except more of a hillbilly I guess--but very delicate. Lionel Barrymore was her father, before his illness set in and forced him into a wheelchair. If you liked THE VOICE OF BUGLE ANN, you will love this 1953 sequel. But beware, it is very much about the "sport" of killing foxes.
There's a line in The Voice of Bugle Anne that talks about how the silver tone of a good fox hound's voice will send chills up the spine. The beautiful prose of this slim volume will do the same. This isn't a book about the prissy red coated horse back east coast type of fox hunting, but a tale of the tobacco chewing, corn likker drinking, pickup driving Ozark type of fox running common to the rural South, a different experience completely and one fading from existence quickly. Many a night I've spent by a good fire with my Grandpa telling stories of epic hunts as we listened to the hounds give tongue. An evocative and atmospheric read you'll enjoy.
Enjoyed the sequal to Bugle Ann. Great read. Always looking for books to read and to send as gifts to family and friends.
Outstanding. Anyone who loves dogs, especially hunting hounds will love this book.
Kantor is always outstanding and this story does not disapoint.
Just had to have for an old time foxhunter in Arkansas. However I did read them before gifting to him!
